"There are many doubts about the origin of tartan, as well as the term itself. It is also unclear when this distinctive cloth was used for the kilt, although it is known from primary sources that the kilt was considered a novelty in the 18th century," explains Ana Llorente, Lecturer in the Fashion Department at the University of Design, Innovation and Technology (UDIT).
