UDIT participates in international event Now Play This (Design Camp Relay)

UDIT, University of Design, Innovation and Technology, participates in the festival Now Play This. An international event that, from 27 to 30 June, took place the "Design Camp Relay" and brought together various institutions from around the world to work simultaneously for three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) around the topic of "Liminality".

This creative retreat also included workshops, talks and activities, culminating in a prototyping session.

The participating institutions were:

  • UDIT, University of Design, Innovation and Technology (Madrid).
  • Goethe-Institut (London)
  • Abertay University (Dundee)
  • Gameplayarts/Killscreen (Los Angeles)
  • UADE (Buenos Aires)

In this sense, UDIT joined the event with two workshops, which were transmitted online through the festival's Discord channel of the festival and the UDIT YouTube channel.

  1. Thursday 27 June (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.): Mechanics of Inactivity: In this workshop, Mohammed Bakira leading pixel artist and developer of successful videogames such as The Longest Road on Earthexplored idle game mechanics and their integration into popular games. Participants learned how to idle-ficate a video game, identifying mechanics and building an adapted gameplay cycle.
  2. Friday 28 June (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.): Character Development: In this workshop, Jessica BlancoPhD in Literature and professor at UDIT, offered a workshop on character development. Attendees received a practical guide to creating video game characters, based on literary construction and liminal entities.

In addition to the events organised by UDIT, participants were able to attend online all the talks, events and workshops organised by the other institutions. For more information, please consult the Discord channel of the event. 

International Context

The event is part of the Now Play This 2024 which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary at Somerset House (London). This festival brings together audiences from around the world to explore game design, promoting creation and dialogue through exhibitions, talks and interactive activities.

Design Camp Relay aims to continue this spirit of international collaboration, providing a platform for artists, designers and academics to share knowledge and develop new projects in a creative and stimulating environment.
