NEU4NEU: Neuroarchitecture for the neurodivergent

NEU4NEU

The NEU4NEU project ("Neuroarchitecture for neurodivergent individuals: creation of a wellbeing index of educational spaces for the learning of neurodivergent individuals") is a competitive initiative led by UDIT and funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities in the call for Knowledge Generation Projects 2024 (PID2024-157540OA-I00), with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF - European Union).

NEU4NEU addresses the need to adapt educational environments for neurodivergent students (e.g. with ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia), with the aim of improving their well-being, attention, memory and creativity through the design of the built space.

Objectives

  • To analyse how architectural parameters such as light, colour, morphology and textures influence the learning processes of neurodivergent students.
  • Integrate methodologies of applied neuroscience, cognitive psychology and interior design to generate applicable scientific evidence.
  • To create a wellbeing index for educational spaces, conceived as a standardised tool to evaluate and optimise inclusive learning environments.

Methodology

  • Generation of immersive 3D scenarios of classrooms and educational environments.
  • Recording of neurophysiological measurements (EEG, heart rate, skin conductance) and eyetracking, together with cognitive tests.
  • Analysis of subjective perception and interviews with teachers, designers and educational managers to enrich the understanding of real experiences.

Practical applications

The results will allow:

  • Develop design tools and strategies to improve the performance and educational experience of neurodivergent students.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations that can be implemented in both adapted classrooms and mainstream educational settings.

Innovation and transfer

The well-being index obtained from the project will be a transferable reference for educational institutions, designers, space managers and education policy makers, enabling better learning environments for all students.

Participating team

TheNEU4NEU project is led by the NEURO-COLAB research group (UDIT), with a consolidated track record in neuroarchitecture, applied neuroscience and cognitive, emotional and physiological evaluation of educational environments.
