The worlds of design and engineering are intertwined in the creation and development of innovative products. In the process of creating and manufacturing products, there are different and often confused approaches: Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design andProduct Design. What are their differences?

The Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering focuses on the management, implementation and optimisation of industrial processes. Industrial engineers work on the analysis, design and programming of production and logistics systems.

On the other hand, the Degree in Industrial Design has a more technical and analytical focus but is oriented towards the design and improvement of products. Industrial designers work on the viability of production, efficiency and optimisation of product manufacturing from an analytical perspective.

Finally, the Degree in Product Design is aperfect intersection between Industrial Engineering, Art and Design. Product designers design the appearance of physical and digital products so that they are innovative, functional and visually appealing. In this process they must take into account aspects beyond aesthetics such as ergonomics, usability, sustainability, safety, etc.

Therefore, if you are looking to learn about the optimisation and improvement of industrial processes , you will be interested in Industrial Engineering. If, on the other hand, you want totrain in the design of the products themselves, it will depend on the perspective you choose: Industrial Design if you want to do it from an analytical approach and Product Design if what attracts you is to develop products in a creative and innovative way.

By distinguishing the differences between these three degrees you will be able to make the decision to study what best suits your vocation.

Why study Product Design?

If what you want is to redefine reality and the objects that surround us from a discipline that combines art, science, technology and strategy, studying the Degree in Product Design will allow you to train for it.

For four years you will learn basic technical aspects (mechanics, kinematics, energy) and professional softwarefor the  three-dimensional representation of objects, you will delve into the science of materials, electronics, mechanical and structural designand you will work on models and prototypes.

You will delve into the impacts of marketing, communication, mass production management and interactive product design (sensors, motor programming) along with service design and robotics.

What are the career opportunities for the Degree in Product Design?

You will be able to work in sectors such as furniture, packaging, toys, accessories, lighting, transport, consultancy, among others.

What will you be able to create if you study Product Design?

You will learn everything you learn in a practical way through project workshops that will allow you to apply the knowledge acquired with the digital manufacturing equipment used in large companies.

Degree in Product Design at UDIT

You will be trained at the leading university in Product Design, being the first to create and offer this university degree in Spain.

The Degree in Product Design is the perfect intersection betweenIndustrial Engineering, Ecodesign and Technological Innovation. A discipline that combines art, science and strategy.

During your four years of training, you will build prototypes and develop your practical work with cutting-edge technologies and equipment, some of which are unique in Spanish universities, such as a Digital Manufacturing laboratory with 3D printers, milling machines, laser cutters, water cutters, etc.

Our learning by doing method works: our students have won more than 40 national and international awards. Prestigious competitions such as Red Dot Design Award, IDA International Design Award, SIT Furniture Design Award, European Product Design Award, CES Innovation Award, LIT Lighting Design Award, etc.
