Pearls: where does your fascination with fashion come from?
"A woman needs strips and strips of pearls," said Coco Chanel. This statement sums up the power of this "pearly concretion, generally greyish white in colour, with shiny reflections and a more or less spheroidal shape, which usually forms inside the shells of various molluscs, especially mother-of-pearl" as defined by the RAE, which has fascinated and continues to fascinate civilisations all over the world.
But what is its real origin, what was its influence on the world of fashion and how did it evolve over time? Ana Llorente, Lecturer in the Fashion Department at UDIT, analyses the importance of the pearl in our history for the newspaper El Español.
