At the recent 10th BID Teaching and Design meeting, held at the Matadero Madrid Design Centre, Alba Castro García, a graduate of the Multimedia and Graphic Design Degree at UDIT, University of Design, Innovation and Technology, won an outstanding mention in the Graphic Design category thanks to her project "A pleasure to meet you", which seeks to challenge and eradicate the stigmas associated with people with Down's syndrome.
"Un gusto conocerte" is a non-profit initiative that aims to change society's perception of people with Down syndrome, going beyond the diagnostic label and highlighting the singularities that make these people unique.
The centrepiece of the project is a publication written using the Easy Reading method, where the main character is a person with Down syndrome. This book, conceived from an intimate point of view, offers a journey through the everyday experiences that have been or are significant in the life of the person portrayed.
The innovative aspect of "A pleasure to meet you" lies in its long-term approach. The project is not limited to a single publication, but proposes a periodical collection, with a book dedicated to a new protagonist each year. In addition, to give it a tangible and personal touch, a launch pack has been designed that includes a small object representative of the person together with their respective book.
With this project, Alba Castro manages to merge her graphic design skills with a socially committed perspective, thus contributing to the construction of a more inclusive and respectful society.
