What is done with the bitter oranges that are thrown away every year in Seville?
Every year in Seville around six million bitter oranges are thrown away. Oranges that we can see every day on the trees that decorate the Andalusian capital and which are of no use whatsoever. In fact, these oranges generate some complications as many cause accidents to pedestrians who end up slipping on them, or try to eat them, but they are not really very healthy.
Some UDIT students and members of the @feel.the.peel group thought of the possibility of using this natural waste to put them to good use and came up with the idea of making some fans, which are much needed in the Andalusian capital during the summer. It is a project that combines sustainability, cultural identity and circular economy. A varied group of students in which each one has contributed their knowledge to achieve this biomaterial that has been presented at the MOMA Museum in New York as a finalist in the Biodesign Challenge platform.
