José Manuel de Andrés Moncayo is an architect and holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Advanced Architectural Projects from the ETSAM (UPM). He was a Hines Pre-doctoral Visiting Scholar at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at the University of Houston (TX, US), where he led the ‘Entropic Ecologies’ studio, focusing on the environmental and social regeneration of obsolete industrial areas in contemporary conurbations.
He is a co-founder, alongside Ana Sabugo, Victor Cano and José Cullen, of the ‘Arquitectura Subalterna’ group, whose research projects addressing the challenges of living in modern suburbs have been featured at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016 and 2018, the 2016 Oslo Architecture Triennial and the 2017 Chile Architecture Biennale.
In his professional practice, he is co-founder and co-director, alongside Ana Sabugo, of SABUGO DE ANDRÉS ARQUITECTOS, a practice whose projects have won awards in the 13th, 14th and 15th editions of the EUROPAN competition for young European architects, consecutively. His proposal for the redevelopment of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol won third prize in the “PIENSASOL” International Competition. His final-year project, “Learning from Las Colmenas”, formed part of the lectures at the AA Summer School 2015 (Unit 6: Rafael Benerytez + Victor Cano).
He has recently collaborated with Iñaki Ábalos on the publications ‘Palacios Comunales Atemporales’ (Puente Editores, 2020), ‘Absolute Beginners’ (Park Books, 2022) and ‘New Primitivism’ (Arquine, 2021), for which he received the 2021 COAM Award for the Promotion of Architecture.
