INTEGRAL REGENERATIVE DESIGN RESEARCH GROUP

The Integral Regenerative Design research group (DESIRe) is focused on the development ofsustainable design for a positive environmental and social impact.

The main objective is to bring visibility to design as a source of change, through a holistic and integrative vision. Our research focuses on three main lines.

MAIN LINES

– Fungal Materials: Development of reproducible protocols for cultivation and co-creation with mycelium, transforming biomass into functional fungal materials with programmable physical properties for design and their integration into the industrial value chain.

– Thermal Energy Storage: Development of sustainable, multifunctional composite materials through the integration of phase change materials (PCM) into porous, organic-inorganic and bio-based matrices, including aerogels, foams, bio-based micro/macrospheres and mycelium-based structures. This objective seeks to achieve efficient thermal energy storage, form stability, leakage resistance, flame-retardant behaviour and stimuli-responsive functionalities, with applications in functional architecture, energy-efficient buildings, cold-chain systems and advanced thermal management.

– Circular Economy: Development of design solutions based on biomaterials and sustainable moulding systems, optimising the technical revalorisation of locally sourced agro-industrial waste to ensure effective scaling and integration into the industrial market.

lines of research

The lines of research that form part of this research group are as follows:

  • 1.   Advanced Biodesign and Fungal Materials
  • 2.   Multifunctional Bio-Based Polymeric Compositions for Thermal Energy Storage and Heat Management
  • 3.   Biomaterials, Sustainability and Circular Economy

OTHER FEATURED PROJECTS

  • RED-KN: Robotics for empowerment, democratization and the generation of knowledge networks.
  • Softworks, design of a preventive security system.
  • Packaging design based on micomaterials.
  • Design of sustainable luminaires. Pending renewal of continuity with HANNUN.
